چکیده

This paper presents the development of a lightweight component model that allows user to manage the introduction and arrangement of new interactive services and devices in the home. Interaction techniques developed through userparticipation enable household members – rather than designers – to configure and reconfigure interactive devices and services to meet local needs. As part of this we have developed a tablet-based editor that discovers available ubiquitous components and presents these to users as jigsaw pieces that can be dynamically recombined. We conclude by considering the broad implications for the design of interactive domestic environments suggested by our approach.

The Concepts of an End-user-enabling Architecture for Ubiquitous Computing

This paper describes the set of concepts that underlie the “Plug-Synapse” model, which supports endusers in composing and configuring ubiquitous computing applications. The technology that implements the model is briefly presented; all have been developed in the course of research during the e-Gadgets (IST-FET) project.

Ubiquitous sensing for smart and aware environments

s computing technology increasingly becomes part of our daily activities, we are required to consider what is the future of computing and how will it change our lives? To address this question, we are interested in developing technologies that would allow for ubiquitous sensing and recognition of daily activities in an environment. Such environments will be aware of the activities performed wit...

Self-configuring mining for ubiquitous computing

Ubiquitous computing software needs to be autonomous so that essential decisions such as how to configure its particular execution are self-determined. Moreover, data mining serves an important role for ubiquitous computing by providing intelligence to several types of ubiquitous computing applications. Thus, automating ubiquitous data mining is also crucial. We focus on the problem of automati...

Self-configuring, Lightweight Sensor Networks for Ubiquitous Computing

We show that it is possible to extract geometric descriptions of the spaces observed by sensor networks, even if the network consists of sensors that are of very limited ability: such as motion detectors. By using statistical techniques and relying only on the unconstrained patterns generated by the occupants of the building we show how to recover information about sensor geometry. This is impo...

Middleware for Building Ubiquitous Computing Applications Using Distributed Objects

Ubiquitous systems are characterized by multi-fold complexity, stemming mainly from the vast number of possible interactions between many heterogeneous objects and services. Devices ranging from simple everyday objects populated with sensing, actuating and communication capabilities to complex computer systems, mobile or not, are treated as reusable “components” of a dynamically changing physic...
